The IMI Colloquium in May
Title: Let’s discover the connection between brain and mathematics
Speaker: OKAMOTO, Tsuyoshi (Faculty of Arts and Science, Kyushu University)
Place: Llive-streaming by Zoom

Attendance: 34 (Students: 15; Staffs: 17; Others: 2)

In the talk, the speaker has given a lucid introduction what official statistics and official statistical microdata are. In addition, several of his research have been also explained utilizing such microdata.

As mentioned in this talk, official statistical microdata are extremely valuable and these utilization are currently being promoted. Unfortunately, the number of utilizing research examples is still very lower than that of other countries. In particular, economic research still accounts for most of the research examples using official statistical microdata. However, at the same time, there may also have enough room to utilize for mathematical research, the speaker advised. Moreover, he also pointed out how important pseudo microdata are from a training perspective of mathematical and data science education. Furthermore, as in the introduced research case study, it may be getting important to combine big data with official statistical microdata for many research fields.

As a consequence of this talk, we could gain some valuable insights from three points of view: industry, academia, and government.
