Event Report:The 3rd CEMDI-PAIMS Symposium

Global Leaders in AI and Materials Science convene at the 3rd CEMDI-PAIMS Symposium, hosted by I²CNER at Kyushu University on April 23rd~25th, 2025.
The event was co-organized by I²CNER, IMI, and Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) in Montreal: https://cemdi.inrs.ca/2025symposium/

This year’s symposium welcomed 45 distinguished speakers from premier institutions across Japan, Canada, China, Italy, and Brazil, fostering in-depth dialogue at the intersection of Artificial Intelligence and Materials Science.

Participating Institutions Included:

  • China: Xi’an Jiaotong University
  • Japan: Kyushu University, Kyoto University, Osaka University, Shimane University, Future University Hakodate, JAMSTEC, Institute of Science Tokyo, Tokyo Metropolitan University, Hiroshima University, Daicel Corporation
  • Canada: INRS, University of Ottawa, Concordia University, Mila – Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute, Université de Montréal, University of Toronto, York University, University of Calgary
  • Italy: Politecnico di Torino
  • Brazil: Universidade Federal do Paraná

Royal Society of Chemistry Oral Presentation Awards
We extend our warm congratulations to the recipients of the Royal Society of Chemistry Oral Presentation Awards, whose outstanding research contributions were recognized during the symposium:

  • Jacqueline Hidalgo Jiménez (Kyushu University) – Digital Discovery Award
  • Daniel Gueckelhorn (Université du Québec) – Materials Horizons Award
  • Maryam Nurhuda (Kyoto University) – Molecular Systems Design & Engineering Award

During the symposium, a dedicated meeting was held to explore industry–academia collaboration and emerging opportunities between Japan and Canada. We were honored by the presence of several distinguished guests, including Prof. Shigenori Fujikawa, Vice-Director of I²CNER; Prof. Hiroshige Matsumoto, Vice-Director of I²CNER; Dr. Masanobu Kubota, Thrust Professor at I²CNER; Prof. Kenji Kajiwara, Director of IMI; Prof. Tomoyuki Shirai, Deputy Director of IMI; Prof. Kaname Matsue, Liaison Division, IMI; Dr. Rusoma Akilimali, Technology and Innovation Advisor from PRIMA Québec; Ms. Emilie Mikura and Dr. Adélie De Marre, Delegates of Québec in Japan; and Mr. Koji Fujii, Trade Commissioner for the Canadian Government. Their participation highlighted the expanding scope and strategic value of international research partnerships, particularly those strengthening ties between Japan and Quebec. Importantly, this symposium also served as a key moment in laying the groundwork for joint faculty collaborations between Kyushu University and INRS, helping to plant the seeds for long-term academic exchange and shared research initiatives.

Another highlight of the program was a guided tour of the world-class research facilities at I²CNER, where participants explored groundbreaking work in clean energy technologies, artificial intelligence, and advanced materials science. We thank all participants, organizers, and partners for their contributions and commitment. We look forward to continued collaboration and to welcoming the community to the next CEMDI-PAIMS Symposium in Montreal in 2026.
