Abstract:
Motivic periods constitute a workable environment for Grothendieck's vision of extending Galois theory to certain classes of not necessarily algebraic numbers. The aim of this talk is to give an example-based introduction to this circle of ideas. If time permits, we will discuss the cases of motivic multiple zeta values and their elliptic analogues in some detail.
